Born in Liège, Belgium, in the early 1960s, Elvis Pompilio is one of the leading figures in contemporary millinery. A designer, craftsman, and educator, he has devoted more than four decades to reinventing one of fashion's most iconic accessories, restoring the hat to a prominent place in contemporary style.
His remarkable career has taken him from the workshops of Liège to the world's great fashion capitals. From Brussels and Antwerp to Paris and London, he steadily built an international reputation that soon extended far beyond Europe to the United States, Canada, Japan, and many other international markets.
Drawn to the arts from an early age, he studied graphic arts at ICADI in Liège. While drawing and design already fueled his imagination, it was fashion that naturally became his chosen path. He developed a particular fascination for accessories—and especially hats—which he viewed as objects that are at once sculptural, functional, and deeply rooted in history.
Entirely self-taught in his craft, Pompilio refined his skills by studying the traditional techniques of master milliners. Driven by curiosity and passion, he dismantled vintage hats to understand their construction, structure, and manufacturing methods. This meticulous approach enabled him not only to master exceptional technical skills but also to develop a distinctive creative language that would become his signature.
At a time when hats had largely disappeared from the contemporary wardrobe, Elvis Pompilio set out to restore their relevance. Reinterpreting classic silhouettes, experimenting with new volumes, and introducing innovative forms, he created designs that appealed to a modern clientele while remaining faithful to the artisanal heritage of millinery.
The year 1987 marked a decisive turning point in his career. Establishing a private showroom in Brussels, open by appointment, he began presenting his collections to a discerning international clientele. His work quickly attracted the attention of leading fashion houses based in the Belgian capital, and collaborations soon followed.
Building on this momentum, he successively opened boutiques in Brussels, Antwerp, Paris, and London. These strategic locations in Europe's leading fashion capitals significantly expanded his visibility among industry professionals and an increasingly international clientele.
Twice a year, he presented his collections in Paris, the undisputed world capital of fashion. His creations rapidly gained the attention of international buyers and were soon distributed through some of the world's most prestigious department stores and specialty boutiques. His clients included Bergdorf Goodman, Saks Fifth Avenue, Henri Bendel, Barneys New York, and Neiman Marcus in the United States, Holt Renfrew in Canada, as well as Japan's renowned Takashimaya department stores.
This simultaneous presence in Europe's major fashion capitals and across key international markets established Elvis Pompilio as one of Belgium's most acclaimed designers in his field. At its peak, his atelier produced approximately 30,000 handcrafted hats annually, exported to customers across several continents.
Alongside his own collections, Elvis Pompilio collaborated with many of the world's leading fashion houses. His expertise was sought after in both Haute Couture and ready-to-wear. Over the years, he worked with renowned maisons including Dior, Valentino, Louis Féraud, Thierry Mugler, Ann Demeulemeester, Céline, Chanel, Dirk Bikkembergs, Anteprima, Véronique Branquinho, Hermès, and many other prestigious fashion houses.
His work also attracted an impressive range of international personalities from the worlds of cinema, music, literature, and the performing arts. Among those who have worn his creations are Madonna, Blondie, Harrison Ford, Mickey Rourke, Arielle Dombasle, Lio, Axelle Red, and acclaimed Belgian novelist Amélie Nothomb.
Several European royal families—including those of Belgium, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, Norway, and Sweden—have also been among his loyal clients.
Beyond the fashion world, his work has been widely recognized for its artistic and cultural significance. Several of his creations have entered the permanent collections of prestigious institutions. His celebrated "sweater hat" (bonnet-pull), one of his most iconic designs, became part of the permanent collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris. Other creations are preserved and exhibited in museums and public and private collections in Belgium and abroad.
One of his most celebrated hats also accompanies the wax figure of Amélie Nothomb at the Musée Grévin, reflecting the unique relationship between the celebrated novelist and the designer.
His outstanding career has been recognized with several official distinctions. Among them, Elvis Pompilio was appointed Officer of the Order of Leopold II in recognition of his contribution to promoting Belgian craftsmanship and contemporary creative excellence.
Driven by a desire to share his passion and expertise with future generations, he joined La Cambre – the National School of Visual Arts in Brussels – where he teaches within the Master's programme in Accessories. For many years, he has mentored emerging designers, passing on both the demanding standards of the profession and the richness of traditional craftsmanship.
After building an internationally recognized brand and managing an extensive international network, Elvis Pompilio gradually chose to return to a more intimate scale, closer to his personal aspirations. He opened a boutique-atelier in Brussels dedicated to exclusive creations, including modular hats, knitted hats, one-of-a-kind pieces, and bespoke commissions.
More recently, he has embraced a return to his artistic roots by focusing on personal creative expression, tailor-made design, and direct relationships with his clients. Today, he welcomes them to his private showroom-atelier in Brussels, where every project is conceived as a unique work of art.
This new direction allows him to explore his creativity with greater freedom while preserving the artisanal tradition that has defined his work since the beginning of his career.
The first representative of the fashion world to be appointed as an Academician, Elvis Pompilio received an exceptional distinction recognizing the entirety of his career. His influence extends well beyond fashion, contributing to Belgium's cultural prestige. This public recognition was further reflected when the Belgian Post issued a series of postage stamps bearing his likeness following a public initiative.
Today, Elvis Pompilio continues to collaborate with exceptional fashion houses and distinguished personalities, including Hermès, Axelle Red, and Princess Delphine of Saxe-Coburg. More than ever, he embodies a unique vision of the hat, where elegance, creativity, craftsmanship, and artistic freedom converge.
Through every one of his creations, Elvis Pompilio demonstrates that a hat is far more than a simple accessory—it is a powerful means of expression, capable of revealing personality, emotion, and style. His career stands as a testament to the ability of a Belgian designer to establish a lasting international presence while remaining true to his artistic identity.
